The Hall of Retired Shoes

Since this is such a common subject I am going to keep a log with a summary of each pair of shoes as it is retired from my roster.

ASICS Gel Venture 5

First run: 1/1/2017
Last run: 5/27/2017
Shortest run: 0.86 miles
Longest run: 14.08 miles
Total distance: 585.82 miles
Total time: 134.85 hours
Average distance: 5.37 miles
Average time: 1.24 hours
Total runs activities: 109

This shoe was originally intended to be a walking shoe, but it's what I used when I started to transition to running starting on 1/1/2017. Because these are ASICS, they suffer from excessive wear on the collar area, which is the same thing that happened to my Gel Nimbus 18s. The shock absorbing was really good and the traction was excellent.

Saucony Hurricane ISO

First run: 4/1/2017
Last run: 4/24/2017
Shortest run: 0.63 miles
Longest run: 14.53 miles
Total distance: 290.52 miles
Total time: 60.38 hours
Average distance: 6.456 miles
Average time: 1.34 hours
Total runs: 45

Fantastic shoes that I purchased by accident. I was shopping for neutral confy shoes (what my store would call a "confy 5") and they accidentally gave me the "stability 5" shoe from the Saucony lineup. Extremely comfortable shoe, but I destroyed the outer sole in less than 300 miles in single pair mode (this happened before I learned about rotating between at least two pairs of shoes). I would totally consider the correct "confy 5" shoe from Saucony (the Triumph) in an alternating shoe arrangement.

New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 V7

First run: 4/25/2017
Last run: 5/18/2017
Shortest run: 3.17 miles
Longest run: 21.23 miles
Total distance: 262.34 miles
Total time: 48.47 hours
Average distance: 11.92 miles
Average time: 2.2 hours
Total runs: 22

This shoe got me past the 20-mile mark, fantastic cushioning. I was also running a lot harder, which can explain the excessive wear in many less running sessions, and once again, these were not rotated. I was so pleased with this shoe that I added the 1080 V8 to my shoe rotation and so far the shoe has been excellent.

Brooks Glycerin 14

First run: 5/19/2017
Last run: 6/17/2017
Shortest run: 1.05 miles
Longest run: 20.08 miles
Total distance: 347.59 miles
Total time: 65.76 hours
Average distance: 11.21 miles
Average time: 2.12 hours
Total runs: 31

This was my first daily run "confy 5" that crossed over the 300-mile mark, which was my basic requirement for switching to a shoe rotation scheme. These shoes wore out extremely well, but sadly on their last run the bounce action simply died. They still had enough sole for casual wear, but they were so hard that it was impossible to wear them for even half an hour of causal walking. And after all of this abuse the uppers still looked brand new, which was shocking to me.

Brooks Glycerin 15 - plain

First run: 6/18/2017
Last run: 9/1/2017
Shortest run: 1 mile
Longest run: 18.25 miles
Total distance: 430.82 miles
Total time: 88.5 hours
Average distance: 9.79 miles
Average time: 2.01 hours
Total runs:44

First shoe of my rotation scheme. Because Brooks only sells the 15 in 14 2E in a single color scheme, they are named with whatever I used to tell them apart. The plain pair is the only one without markings.

The shoe runs almost exactly like the Glycerin 14. The uppers feel a little wider, and there's less material so it feels like a lighter shoe. I was able to go well past 400 miles on these, which was awesome in terms of bang for the buck. At 430 miles the shoes weren't shot, but the tread was so thin that I retired them because I didn't feel safe in them. I still use these as my house slippers/recovery shoe/shield against banging my toes on my furniture (yup, this is a thing).

Brooks Glycerin 15 - glitter

First run: 6/19/2017
Last run: 12/9/2017
Shortest run: 1.38 miles
Longest run: 17.02 miles
Total distance: 444.51 miles
Total time: 90.08 hours
Average distance: 9.46 miles
Average time: 1.92 hours
Total runs:47

Second shoe of my rotation scheme.I tried to mark them with a piece of blue yarn that was sort of glittery, so that's what I named them. The yarn didn't stay in place, so I switched them to a plastic ribbon which is still in place.

Like the plain pair, these didn't get shot, but I wore out the soles enough that I didn't feel OK running them. Since the sole wasn't as far gone as the plain pair, I still wear these casually. And yes, the uppers are still pristine.

Hoka One One Bondi 5

First run: 8/16/2017
Last run: 8/19/2017
Shortest run: 14.01 miles
Longest run: 16.01 miles
Total distance: 30.02 miles
Total time: 5.45 hours
Average distance: 15.01 miles
Average time: 2.73 hours
Total runs:2

A failed experiment. I really hated these shoes. The fit was fantastic, the cushioning was awesome and this is obviously a quality shoe, my wife has gone through four pairs of these shoes and she loves them to death. They simply don't work with the way I run.

Brooks Glycerin 15 - zip

First run: 8/24/2017
Last run: 1/23/2018
Shortest run: 1.73 miles
Longest run: 17.17 miles
Total distance: 620.51 miles
Total time: 124.09 hours
Average distance: 10.88 miles
Average time: 2.18 hours
Total runs:57

Third shoe of my rotation scheme. I marked these with a locking zip tie. This pair was part of a three-pair rotation, which explains how I was able to push the mileage so far without getting hurt.

These were my hero pair. I actually retired them because I felt sorry for them, I am sure I still had at least a couple more runs before the bounce got shot for good, but the outer thread is almost gone so they'll go into casual wear duty.

Brooks Glycerin 15 - zip 2

First run: 9/9/2017
Last run: 2/11/2018
Shortest run: 0.88 miles
Longest run: 16.09 miles
Total distance: 633.34 miles
Total time: 126.43 hours
Average distance: 11.11 miles
Average time: 2.22 hours
Total runs:57

Another hero pair, these were marked with two zip ties. Also a part of a 3-pair rotation, which explains the ridiculously high mileage. These shoes had maybe one or two runs left before they would blow up and I didn't want to risk injury.

Brooks Glycerin 15 - green zip

First run: 6/17/2017
Last run: 6/20/2018
Shortest run: 11.53 miles
Longest run: 12.52 miles
Total distance: 755.42 miles
Total time: 151.5 hours
Average distance: 11.1 miles
Average time: 2.2 hours
Total runs:68

My last and greatest hero pair from the Glycerin 15s, these were marked with one green zip tie. I am positive that these shoes had less than two very short runs left before they truly blew up, plus the outer sole finally wore out to the point of making them slippery. It broke my heart to retire these, these shoes were absolutely fantastic!

New Balance 1080 V6 yellow

First run: 2/18/2018
Last run: 8/11/2018
Shortest run: 1.01 miles
Longest run: 14.12 miles
Total distance: 527.74 miles
Total time: 107.5 hours
Average distance: 10.34 miles
Average time: 2.1 hours
Total runs: 51

Very fast shoes, build quality is much worse than in the V5. The collars started to disintegrate well before the 500-mile mark and the bounce is mostly gone. Not great for walking. I am actually happy with the bang for the buck, they did last me past 525 miles, but it pisses me off that the collars disintegrated while I have Brooks Glycerin that made it past 700 miles with the uppers completely AND absolutely intact.

New Balance 1080 V6 black

First run: 1/13/2018
Last run: 10/27/2018
Shortest run: 1.47 miles
Longest run: 15.01 miles
Total distance: 605.24 miles
Total time: 123 hours
Average distance: 10.08 miles
Average time: 2 hours
Total runs: 60

Identical experience to the yellow pair, down to the self-destructing collars. Hell of a fast shoe, great bang for the buck but it is a goddamn shame that I had to stop using the shoe because of the worn out collars, not because of a worn out outer sole or blown bounce.

Brooks Glycerin 16 black

First run: 6/21/2018
Last run: 12/7/2018
Shortest run: 7.01 miles
Longest run: 14.01 miles
Total distance: 541.65 miles
Total time: 106 hours
Average distance: 11.05 miles
Average time: 2:10 hours
Total runs: 49

Unremarkable. No more comfortable than the Glycerin 15, worse uppers, same outer sole. Toe box width was a little bit better. I was disappointed by the changes in the upper materials.

Brooks Glycerin 16 grey

First run: 6/10/2018
Last run: 12/9/2018
Shortest run: 1.03 miles
Longest run: 13.31 miles
Total distance: 591.27 miles
Total time: 117 hours
Average distance: 10.75 miles
Average time: 2:07 hours
Total runs: 55

Same overall impression as the black model.

Hoka One One Bondi 6 Alloy/Grey

First run: 11/18/2018
Last run: 8/27/2019
Shortest run: 0.34 miles
Longest run: 14.13 miles
Total distance: 901.55 miles
Total time: 186:26 hours
Average distance: 9.59 miles
Average time: 1:59 hours
Total runs: 94

94 fucking runs from a pair of shoes, without hurting myself. And they still have some traction left, and the bounce is still there, and the uppers are intact but starting to separate from the sole, which is the only reason for retiring them. What a great pair of shoes! That's $1.52/run (including sales tax) or 16 cents a friggin mile. Unbelievable for a guy that couldn't stand the Bondi 5!

Hoka One One Bondi 6 Blue

First run: 8/27/2019
Last run: 9/21/2020
Shortest run: 0.72 miles
Longest run: 13.75 miles
Total distance: 1,027 miles
Total time: 132:13 hours
Average distance: 10.48 miles
Average time: 1:34 hours
Total runs: 98

1,027 miles from a pair of shoes, without hurting myself, is just absolutely fantastic. Almost half of the sole is smooth but traction isn't a problem, again intact uppers except for a tiny fray near in the collar the eyelets, and the sole is starting to separate from the uppers. These will be replaced by my first pair of Bondi 7s.
