About

The short version: I went from asthmatic weakling until my 11th birthday or so, to long distance cyclist in college, to US Army enlisted (lots of running), to nothing for 20 years. And I picked up over 100 pounds in the process until one day I couldn't walk without the aid of crutches.

I started to count calories and walk a little bit. Then the distances grew and within three months I had shed 70 pounds or so. And I got curious to see if I could run again.

That was January, 1st 2017 and I ran 5 miles nonstop.

I slowly started to replace some of my walking sessions with runs until after a couple of months later I was exclusively running. I used the 10% rule to slowly increase my weekly total mileage. Two months later I was able to make it to a half-marathon, 13.1 miles, for the first time.

Eventually I managed to run up to 21 miles or so, then settled into a 70-80 miles per month routine. I realized that I could eventually run a full marathon, but it would involve a lot of punishment, while under my current regime I can usually have two 15-16 mile runs in one week without feeling them, and I get bored with anything less than 8-10 miles per session. It's ironic that what I call a recovery run other people call their long run, but I am a very slow runner.

I still run every day, and I still average 70 miles per week or more. But I don't race. I just run because I can, and I enjoy it.
